Today is the Fourth of July. We generally enjoy family fun camping, fireworks, picnics and such to celebrate. Why do we celebrate? We celebrate the conditional congress declaring the freedom of the thirteen colonies from British rule and the adoption of the declaration of independence. John Adams had written to his wife Abigail:
The second day of July, 1776, will be the most memorable epoch in the history of America. I am apt to believe that it will be celebrated by succeeding generations as the great anniversary festival. It ought to be commemorated as the day of deliverance, by solemn acts of devotion to God Almighty. It ought to be solemnized with pomp and parade, with shows, games, sports, guns, bells, bonfires, and illuminations, from one end of this continent to the other, from this time forward forever more.
The point is not when the declaration happened but that is happened. All of what I have just said is probably not news to you. And the history may not come to you as a surprise however I think it might be a good idea to have a refresher.
The declaration and our freedom was bought with the price of the lives of hundreds of thousands of men, women and children. To be specific the entire British Naval fleet shelled a predominantly civilian Fort named Fort Henry to knock down the Flag. The Flag which symbolized our declaration of freedom, freedom from British rule. Men willingly put their lives on the line to hold up the Flag to make a clear statement that the thirteen colonies would not surrender. Because of that night and those men we now enjoy the freedoms and liberties no other century has.
Application to Today
Those Freedoms and liberties do not make life perfect or carefree but I think we need to truly appreciate why we have those benefits. Therefore it is imperative we as United State citizens treat this land as our home. A person would not think to come in your home and dictate what food you can eat or the decorations which are allowed to be displayed or the pictures of your loves to be seen. Why do the citizens of the United States allow our Flag to be discriminated against? Businesses opt not to fly the flag so they will receive more business. Over the past year many citizen have been told not to fly the flag because it might offend someone of certain origin or religion. At the moment I cant give you specific instance however I’m sure you could think of one. The question is what do we do now?
We need to Fly our Flag with pride we need to stand up for the Liberties we hold dear, or the liberties we never give a thought to. In closing would like to leave you with a few quotes.
